The sound of a door opening
to the monkey in a cage
is terror on a hinge

but a worse fear
comes as the lights
click on to peel away

the night’s thin layer 
of darkness
leaving no protection

from watching
the monkey in the next cage
be first to undergo what happens 

when the coat
a doctor wears
turns white the shade of panic.
